It’s a wonder how you can go years without noticing a real talent working in a genre you consider yourself an authority on. Case in point: Matt Chester. After seeing mention of his 11th Hour label on various forums over the last few years I finally downloaded a mix by him. The Crater Crawlers mix featured an arsenal of Detroit and Chicago styled funky techno and house that really caught my ear. So with an obvious affinity for those sounds it’s not a surprise to find his recent release on Sula Muse, Relapse, to reference some of those same loci. It’s most evident on “Relapsed,” a bustling techno joint that is seeped in evocative strings with a tight bassline ripple and translucent vocal stabs. But just as satisfying is “The First Rains,” a track that favors melody as its main operating procedure, similarly in style to early Stasis or early Black Dog Productions material but within a modern techno framework. The swirling synth chords and protracted bass catch twinkling keyboard wisps that act like dewy drops after a Spring rain fall. Gorgeous stuff from a producer that deserves wider recognition.
